The Heart is the only Reality (Ramana Maharshi)

The Heart is the only Reality. The mind is only a transient phase. To remain as one’s Self is to enter the Heart.

  1. The heart of man is deceitful beyond repair. And so I am forced to agree from a human perspective. But since it is full of selfish ambition I am forced to look elsewhere for truth. Reality is not in my heart. Chaos and evil live there. How do I know this? I compare my personal desires and righteousness to the God of the Bible and find myself completely unreal (or unrealistic, if you will).

Anyone who still thinks they are something, has never met the Lord Most High. But that is promised to change also.

    By His Grace.

    • Yes, in general, if not in principle; it is a fallen state after all. There are the words from the Gospel: “With men is impossible, but with God all things are possible” .
I would add: “With Love all things are possible”. But then God is Love, and Love is God, or Godly.

  2. Xan says:

Ramana is not talking the emotional heart, which only part of the ego-mind. It’s the spiritual Heart that is pure and whole and is your own true nature.

  3. You are right, of course. My response above was in sympathy with a Christian (I spoke of ‘the Fall of Man’). Giving prominence to love of God in the former is the same as love and devotion to Iswara in advaita Vedanta. When referring to nirguna brahman, on the other hand, it is serenity, beingness (sat), immutability which are emphasised rather than love. Even the ‘ananda’ (bliss, beauty, contentment) of sat-chit-ananda, is a concession to the limited mind (in vyavaharika).
